One Day Workshops
Black and White Film Development and Print Process
This workshop is offered the first Saturday of the Month January-June
10:00-16:00-one hour break.

This tutorial is geared for the photographer who is already fluent in photography and wishes to get back into the darkroom. And, it is a workshop geared for those who shoot film but wish to learn how to proces their own black and white film. In the 6 hours, participants with process one roll of exposed 35mm black and white film, make a proof sheet and one final print.
Equipment, chemistry and paper (for this exercise) are supplied by the Gallery; this is included in the cost of the workshop. Space is limited to 5 participants. Please come to class with one roll of exposed black and white film of either Kodak or Ilford brand.
How to Take a Better Photograph
Digital and Analogue

This workshop is for the individual who has a camera but wishes to learn how to take better photographs, learning more about the how’s and why’s of photography. Here basic instruction will be given on switching to manual, when to use flash, composition, basic use of controls on the camera-digital and manual. Please bring the instruction booklet for your camera.

Basic Black and White Photography

This course will cover the fundamentals of black and white photography both in theory and practice. Emphasis will be placed on mastering the technical aspects of the medium including the functions of the SLR camera, the enlarger and the chemical processes of developing and printing black and white negatives. Class discussion will be encouraged for developing skills in critical thinking about artwork. Develop critical vocabulary for visual literacy (how to think and talk about visual arts) through readings, discussion, class critiques, and projects assigned by the instructor.
Course Objective
-Use all controls of a basic 35mm camera to create black and white photographic images
-Develop film; print contacts sheets, print images on fibre based black and white photo paper
-Composition of an image
-How light works and how to read a light meter
-Engage in critical and artistic discussion of students work
-Develop a good darkroom practice
-The use of Photography as a means to communicate-to expresses an intelligent and
thoughtful idea, notion, and/or emotion.

10 week course
Advanced Black and White Photography
This course provides an in-depth study of the processes of black and white photography, building on the foundation established in an introductory photography course. The student will improve exposure techniques and will refine black and white printmaking for the purpose of more successfully achieving the aesthetic and practical intent of the photograph. Visualization will be strengthened through research, reading, lecture, practice, and critique. Assignments reflect individual expression through photography. SLR 35mm format is the base of this class however students will be encouraged to access different format cameras where possible and process to print.
Course Objective
1. Observe and describe visual qualities that characterize the photographic image;
2. Solve visual art problems;
3. Communicate ideas visually;
4. Develop and maintain a portfolio of prints;
5. Develop proficiency in handling tools related to the photographic print;
6. Interpret the meanings of artistic works in photography;
7. Identify historical influences on photography;
